Monstera is a species of evergreen tropical plants. Its name is derived from the Latin word for “abnormal” which is a given due to their natural leaf holes. They are usually easy to care for and beginner-friendly. The many monstera varieties may confuse you if you want to buy or grow monstera as a houseplant. But fret not, here’s a quick look at some of the most common varieties of monstera. Our favourites are Monstera Deliciosa, Monstera Peru and Monstera Borsigiana Albo Variegata.

1. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Deliciosa 

Monstera deliciosa is also known as Mexican Breadfruit Plant because of the edible fruit it produces in the jungles. It is one of the most popular varieties of indoor plants. Deliciosa is characterized by its large, glossy, and heart-shaped leaves. It can grow quite tall so make sure you have adequate space for the same. 

2. Monstera Peru

Monstera Peru, also known as Monstera karstenianum, has vibrant, glossy, and leathery textured leaves. It behaves more like a succulent and doesn’t have the usual holes that monsteras do. As it is a low-maintenance plant, it doesn’t need a lot of attention. 

3. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Obliqua

With leaf holes that are huge in size, Monstera obliqua is extremely rare and expensive. They have delicate leaves which are paper-thin. This variety is only recommendable for expert gardeners with a green thumb.

4. Monstera Subpinnata

An elegant-looking plant, Monstera subpinnata has deeply split or finger-like leaves. When leaves fully grow, they can reach up to 12 inches in length and 8 inches in width. Even though they are rare, they are pretty easy to grow. 

5. Monstera Adansonii Variegated

Monstera Adansonii Variegated are quite rare and popular. It has unique variegated (partially white) leaves which need more light than other varieties. They also have a fast-growing nature.

6. Monstera Rhaphidophora

Also known as Mini Monstera, Monstera Rhaphidophora is similar to Monstera deliciosa in appearance. It is another fast-growing variety that is easy to care for and very rewarding.

7. Monstera Epipremnoides

Monstera epipremnoides is an elder brother to Monstera adansonii since it has larger leaves. It is one of the most popular varieties and has similar thin and pointed leaves just like Monstera adansonii.

8. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Borsigiana Albo Variegata

One of the most expensive plants in the world, Monstera Borsigiana Albo Variegata is a rare find. They have attractive patterning and they have white striped or completely white leaves.

9. Monstera Adansonii

Monstera adansonii is smaller in size than Monstera delicious and looks great in hanging baskets. The leaves have oval-shaped holes and are glossy and solid green.

10. Monstera Siltepecana

A smaller-leaved vine, Monstera siltepecana, is simply splendid to look at. Its leaves have dark green veins and beautiful patches of silver.

11. Monstera Pinnatipartita

Monstera pinatipartita is an exotic-looking plant with pinnatifid leaves. It is captivating to watch them grow as they transform when they mature. Juvenile leaves are solid and start to develop fenestrations as they grow. 

12. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Dubia

Monstera dubia is also known as the shingle plant because of the appearance it gives when it grows closely against any support. Its leaves have beautiful variations of light and dark green colours which are in the shape of a spade.

13. Monstera Acuminata

Due to its small size, Monstera acuminata can also be referred to as Monstera adansonii’s little brother. Its leaves have a smooth texture and a heart shape. They look great when suspended in a hanging basket. 

14. Monstera Thai Constellation

The Thai Constellation is a unique plant as it was developed in a Thai lab. It has white speckled leaves that appear starlike and are gorgeous to look at. 

15. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Standleyana

Originating in Costa Rica, Monstera standleyana is a striking plant with colourful and holey leaves. It is often mistakenly called the Philodendron Cobra due to its resemblance with Philodendron’s variegated leaves. It is an easy-going plant and grows up to 2 to 3 feet in height. 

16. Monstera Varieties- Monstera Esqueleto

Monstera esqueleto is a rare plant with large, leathery textured, and heavily fenestrated leaves. They grow tall and take up a lot of space. These plants are only recommendable for expert gardeners.

17. Monstera Punctulata

Monstera punctulata is similar in appearance to Monstera Dubia as it starts off as a shingle plant. Its leaves are dark greens and large with a soft texture. 

18. Monstera Acacoyaguensis

Monstera Acacoyaguensis is a rare plant characterized by its huge perforated leaves. They are easy to grow and can climb great heights.

Philodendron Bipinnatifidum 

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is a plant mistaken for a Monstera and it is often sold as one.  It has bright green leaves which are “twice split,” based on which its name is derived.
